at 120 D.P.S. Road , kolkata -700 033 was inaugurated
by Shri Vinod Kumar Sharma, General Manager, Metro Railway
Kolkata on 31st December 2004 |
The Medical
facilities available to Metro Railway employees, their
dependant family members and also to registered retired
employees have been limited to provision of outdoor
treatment and facilities for certain investigations
only. Health care has been available at Tollygunge
Health Unit, First-aid Post at Noapara and Lock-up
Dispensaries at Metro Bhawan and Belgachia. Patients
of Metro Railway have been going to hospitals of Eastern
& South Eastern Railways for indoor treatment
as well as for specialist care in some disciplines
that are not available. Similarly, a number of special
investigations are also unavailable and patients have
to go to other Railway hospitals whenever such tests
are necessary. Metro Railway Medical Department has
consistently endeavoured to provide quality health
care notwithstanding the limited facilities available.

Proposal
for a 30 bedded Hospital for Metro Railway was included
in the Railway Budget for the year 2001 – 2002
presented in Parliament by the then Honourable Railway
Minister Kum. Mamata Banerjee as this was a long standing
demand of the Metro Railway employees. The necessary
fund for setting up of the Hospital was provided in
the Pink Book of 2001-2002 under the category ‘New
Works’ and the same was again reflected in the
Pink Books of all subsequent years under the category
‘Works in Progress’. The sanctioned fund,
as reflected in the Pink Books, was apportioned by
Metro Railway authority to the different departments
for completing all the requirements of the Hospital
to make it fully functional. As the construction work
undertaken by Engineering Department of Metro Railway
progressed, other requirements also needed to be assessed
like electrical points required, requirement of telephone
facilities, hospital appliances required, necessary
manpower etc. GM / M. Rly desired that every effort
should be made to provide comprehensive health care
with proper modern day diagnostic & therapeutic
facilities, as a result a 30 bedded hospital was constructed
& started.
